For Councillors#

Firstly, thank you.

Being a councillor means balancing casework, meetings, local priorities, and the many conversations that happen every week. We know your time is limited, and the purpose of Farnham Voice is not to create more work. If anything, we hope to make some parts of your role a little easier.

What we’re trying to achieve#

Farnham Voice exists to help the local community express its views in a structured, representative way.

By gathering anonymous community feedback, understanding historical context where possible, and communicating known constraints before surveys begin, we aim to produce more refined community data that supports informed conversations and more effective consultations.

Our hope is that this reduces repeated enquiries, helps set realistic expectations, and gives the local community a clearer understanding of issues that are being discussed more widely.

Councillors, councils, and local organisations should always remain the primary source of information. Where we’ve gathered community feedback on an issue, we’ll link directly to the relevant official pages, project updates, consultations, and decisions, making it easier for people to find the information they need without navigating the wider council website.

We don’t intend to duplicate or maintain a second set of progress updates. Instead, we’ll provide context around the issue, summarise the community feedback we’ve gathered, and signpost people directly to the official source for the latest information. Our aim is to make official information easier to find, not to replace it.

Ultimately, we hope Farnham Voice becomes somewhere you can confidently direct people when an issue is generating a high level of interest, knowing they’ll be able to understand the wider context, contribute their views where appropriate, and easily access the relevant official information.

What we ask of you#

Very little.

In practice, we ask no more of councillors than any resident or community organisation would.

Where appropriate, we’d simply appreciate:

  • A point of contact so survey findings reach the right person.
  • Where helpful, a straightforward explanation, in plain English, of what has been considered, what happens next, or why something may not be feasible.
  • Occasionally, a short conversation while we’re preparing a survey, where your local knowledge, historical context, or understanding of an issue could help us ask better questions and explain any known constraints before consulting the community.

That’s it.

We’re not looking to create additional meetings, formal commitments, or ongoing work. Our aim is simply to understand enough context to communicate it clearly, helping the community begin discussions with realistic expectations while allowing you to focus on your existing responsibilities.

A popular idea isn’t always a deliverable one, and we’d rather understand any known constraints before a survey goes out than after. Please read Understanding Community Consensus — it explains why, and what we hope you can help us get right.

Why we think this helps#

Councillors often receive the same concern from multiple people through different channels.

While every conversation matters, it can be difficult to judge whether an issue affects a handful of people or represents a much broader community concern.

Farnham Voice helps organise that feedback into a single, structured picture. Rather than replacing the conversations you already have, it complements them by providing anonymous, aggregated community data that can help inform future discussions and decision making.

Where appropriate, any context or explanation you provide can also help us explain the bigger picture before a survey is published. If the community understands known constraints or previous work from the outset, discussions can focus on realistic options rather than revisiting ideas that are already known to be impractical.

This not only improves the quality of community feedback but can also reduce the need to explain the same context repeatedly to different people over time.

Why your support matters#

The local community benefits when communication is open, expectations are realistic, and everyone has access to the same information.

By working together, we believe we can make community engagement more representative, consultations more informed, and local conversations more constructive.

If Farnham Voice can help reduce duplication, improve communication, produce more refined community data, and make official information easier to access, then we’re achieving exactly what we set out to do.

Getting in touch#
