Traffic Calming#
Vehicle speeds are a recurring concern on several roads in Farnham. We’re gathering local knowledge on the locations below before deciding, with councillors and the relevant authorities, what to take forward.

Castle Hill — Following the Current Survey
In Consideration and Discussion: A focused review of traffic-calming measures along the Castle Hill corridor, following the current Traffic & Safety on Castle Hill survey. We’re seeking views from residents, businesses and regular road users.
Background: Castle Hill has been the subject of ongoing discussion for many years, with numerous site visits, assessments and meetings involving local authorities and other stakeholders. The route runs through three different speed limits:
- The 20mph zone through Castle Street.
- The 30mph zone beyond the Masonic Hall.
- The 40mph zone beginning just past the cricket ground.
Where we’re not focusing — the 20mph zone: Authoritative contacts have made it clear that the existing 20mph limit is not intended to be an actively enforced speed limit, and we have been advised that there are currently no plans for enforcement measures such as speed cameras or other active calming within this section. Because meaningful discussion should be guided by evidence — good decisions rely on good data, together with a clear understanding of the practical, technical and financial constraints decision-makers face — we are not seeking views on introducing speed enforcement within the existing 20mph zone. There is currently insufficient evidence to support such a proposal, and we don’t believe it would be productive to focus on measures that have already been ruled out by the relevant authorities.
Where we see potential — passive calming through better crossings: Our Safe Crossings Initiative could lead to meaningful change. Improved pedestrian crossings, particularly around Lowndes Passage and Old Park Lane, may naturally encourage lower vehicle speeds through better road design and increased driver awareness. These passive traffic-calming measures are often more achievable and can deliver wider benefits for both pedestrians and motorists.
A key focus — collisions outside the 20mph section: Beyond the 20mph zone, there have been several recorded collisions, including some classified as serious, along the Castle Hill corridor and the approach towards the higher-speed sections. These areas remain an important focus of our review.
Firgrove Hill — Near the Bridge Square Bends
In Consideration and Discussion: Traffic calming, along with SAMs (Smiley Activated Messages) in both directions.
Reasoning: To reduce speeds approaching and descending the hill.
